The city of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado province, hosted the launch of the Literacia Digital programme, an initiative to promote digital inclusion and youth development. The programme is a partnership between ExxonMobil, Girl Child Rights (GCR) and the Ministry of Education and Culture, with the objective of equipping young students with the digital skills they need.

120 computers for 8 schools

Under the programme, ExxonMobil donated 120 desktop computers to equip computer labs in 8 public secondary schools in the city of Pemba. In the coming years, more than 40,000 students will benefit directly from these labs.

The handover ceremony took place at Gingone Secondary School, where the first lab was installed. It was attended by the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, who highlighted the importance of technology for the development of young people and the community.

Programme objectives

The Literacia Digital programme aims to promote access to technological tools that broaden education and employment opportunities for young people, especially girls, in Cabo Delgado. With the growth of the digital economy, technological skills are becoming essential for entering the labour market and for creating solutions to local challenges.

The initiative gives priority to the inclusion of vulnerable groups, offering access to resources that are beyond the reach of many communities. By providing computer training, the programme seeks to increase students’ technical skills and contribute to youth empowerment and to reducing gender inequalities in the field of technology.

Implementation

The implementation of the programme is led by GCR, a Mozambican civil society organisation dedicated to the protection, empowerment and rights of women, girls and vulnerable populations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture. This partnership seeks to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the project, so that more schools and students can benefit from equipment and digital literacy training.

About the programme

The Literacia Digital programme is funded by ExxonMobil, as part of its investment in education and capacity building in local communities, and implemented by GCR with the Ministry of Education and Culture in the public secondary schools of the city of Pemba.
