Between 4 and 6 April 2025, an intensive training was held for 32 male and female mentors, with the objective of strengthening the prevention, mitigation of and response to gender-based violence (GBV) through mentoring strategies and the engagement of men in communities.

The initiative was organised by Girl Child Rights (GCR), in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and with financial support from the European Union, under the “Tolerância Zero” programme.

An intersectoral training

The training was attended by representatives of the districts of Tambara, Macossa, Mossurize and Gondola, as well as Social Action focal points and members of the Section for Assistance to Families and Minors Victims of Violence. The presence of these institutions alongside the mentors gave the training an intersectoral and collaborative approach, bringing together those who work in the community and those who provide services to survivors.

Topics covered

Over the three days, the following topics were covered:

  • an in-depth understanding of GBV;
  • case management;
  • stress management;
  • referral pathways;
  • the role of male engagement in behaviour change.

The training was based on the principle that social change requires the active participation of all members of the community, men included.

About the programme

The “Tolerância Zero” programme reflects the commitment of the European Union and UNFPA to gender equality. It promotes the empowerment of women and girls through cooperation with the Government, civil society organisations, the media and the private sector, to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence in Mozambique. GCR implements the programme in partnership with UNFPA, with funding from the European Union.
