Health: HIV and TB

We integrate HIV and tuberculosis prevention and treatment adherence support into our protection work, through community activists.

the challenge

Finding people who have left treatment

In Manica and Sofala, many people living with HIV miss appointments or stop antiretroviral treatment, and some tuberculosis cases are only identified when activists screen in the community. The two diseases go together: in 2023, 1,453 tuberculosis patients followed in the programme tested HIV-positive and started antiretroviral treatment.

Violence, displacement and disability increase this vulnerability. The Strategic Plan 2026–2030 recognises the link between GBV, displacement and health, and so integrates HIV and tuberculosis prevention and linkage to treatment into protection work, including for GBV survivors and people with disabilities.

our response

Activists linking homes and health facilities

Since 2021, GCR has implemented community-based HIV and tuberculosis programmes funded by the Global Fund, through Pathfinder International and CCS (Centro de Colaboração em Saúde). In 2023, more than 360 activists, lay counsellors, mentor mothers and male champions worked with 62 health facilities in eight districts of Manica and 10 health facilities in Nhamatanda, Sofala.

Activists screen for tuberculosis and HIV in the community, transport samples, visit people who have stopped treatment at home and accompany them back to the health facility. Mentor mothers support pregnant and breastfeeding women; male champions support men living with HIV; community dialogues tackle stigma.

In the current Global Fund phase (GC7, 2024–2026), GCR works in Manica through CCS and ICRH-M (International Centre for Reproductive Health – Mozambique), and in Nhamatanda through CCS.

Chimoio: back on treatment, and now a mobiliser

In a neighbourhood of Chimoio, a young man who was coughing, feverish and losing weight had given up: he said he would rather die at home. A GCR activist based at the local health centre visited him and persuaded him to give a sputum sample for tuberculosis testing.

Three days later, the result came back positive. The activist accompanied him to the health facility, where he started treatment. Three months later, he was recovering and had returned to his daily activities.

Today, he helps activists mobilise his neighbours for community dialogues whenever they come to his neighbourhood.
