On 29 September 2026, the UNHCR Deputy Director and GCR’s Technical Director visited the community of Nanjua, in Ancuabe, to follow the Safe Spaces, male engagement and GBV case management of the Programa de Protecção e Soluções para o Norte de Moçambique.
On 29 September 2026, the community of Nanjua, in Ancuabe district, received a high-level visit under the Programa de Protecção e Soluções para o Norte de Moçambique. The programme is implemented by Girl Child Rights (GCR), in partnership with AVSI, Humanity & Inclusion (HI) and ActionAid, with funding from UNHCR.
The visit was attended by the UNHCR Deputy Director and GCR’s Technical Director. The delegation followed the activities of the Safe Spaces for women and girls, the male engagement activities and the mechanisms for managing and referring cases of gender-based violence (GBV).
In the Safe Spaces
In the Safe Spaces, women and girls shared their experience of the awareness sessions on GBV, rights, protection mechanisms and ways of seeking support. On the day of the visit, the Safe Spaces had 30 participants: 15 women and 15 girls.
The participants also highlighted the sewing activities, which allow them to acquire new skills and to produce and sell their work, generating income to support their families.
Male engagement
Twenty-eight men and boys took part in the male engagement activities and explained how they have been sharing the knowledge they acquired with other members of the community. During the conversation, they expressed interest in setting up dialogue groups for men, as trusted spaces to talk about experiences, feelings and everyday challenges and to strengthen their involvement in GBV prevention.
Case management and referral
The visit was also a chance to learn about the procedures for identifying, referring and following up cases, including the role of the paralegals in supporting survivors: guidance on their rights and referral to the appropriate services, in coordination with the multisectoral protection network.
Listening to the communities
The visit was also an opportunity to listen directly to the communities and learn about the changes, learning and challenges experienced by women, girls and men in Nanjua.
