According to UN Women, one in three women in Mozambique has experienced some form of violence.

On 25 November 2025, Girl Child Rights (GCR) joined communities, the Government of Mozambique, donors and national and international partners to mark the start of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, a worldwide mobilisation for the protection of the rights of girls and women.

The date also marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

GCR’s work throughout the year

Throughout the year, GCR worked to protect girls, adolescents and young women, strengthening community and institutional systems to prevent violence, respond to cases and ensure local support and protection mechanisms.

2025: violence in the digital space

In 2025, the campaign placed violence in the digital space at the centre of the debate, where girls face growing risks: cyberbullying, sexual extortion, hate speech, online harassment and other forms of digital abuse.

Actions during the 16 Days

During the campaign, GCR teams led a range of actions:

  • community talks;
  • training and capacity building for young people and local leaders;
  • intergenerational dialogues;
  • safe spaces for girls;
  • digital awareness campaigns;
  • mobilisation of community leaders and influencers;
  • youth caravans;
  • door-to-door awareness-raising.

These activities reinforce the message that every girl has the right to live free from violence: at home, in the community, at school and also in the digital world.

Message from the Executive Director

“The 16 Days of Activism remind us that preventing violence requires continuous commitment. At GCR, we reaffirm every day our mission to ensure that every girl grows up with dignity, protection and opportunities to thrive.” — Luisa Netsai Sekaimweshe, Executive Director of Girl Child Rights
