GCR was part of Mozambique's delegation to the EmpowerHerTrade regional workshop on the African Continental Free Trade Area, held in Nairobi on 26 and 27 November 2024, with support from Global Affairs Canada and the UN Women Regional Office.
Girl Child Rights (GCR) took part in the EmpowerHerTrade regional workshop on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), held on 26 and 27 November 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting brought together representatives of four countries – Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania – to promote trade and regional cooperation with a focus on women’s empowerment.
The aim of the workshop
With support from Global Affairs Canada, in partnership with the UN Women Regional Office, the workshop focused on integrating gender equality and women’s economic empowerment into the implementation of the AfCFTA. The aim is to ensure that the benefits of the agreement reach women entrepreneurs and their communities.
Mozambique’s delegation
Mozambique was represented by a five-member delegation:
- the Directorate-General for Small and Medium Enterprises, of the Ministry of Industry and Trade;
- another member of the Ministry of Industry and Trade;
- UN Women;
- a young woman entrepreneur;
- GCR.
GCR was nominated to join the delegation by UN Women Mozambique. GCR’s representative regarded the nomination as an opportunity to contribute to the discussions on trade and regional cooperation centred on women’s empowerment.
What the participation means for GCR
The workshop gave GCR a platform to engage with regional actors, share experiences and contribute to the discussions. It coincided with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
